Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the results of corneal cross-linking in paediatric patients with keratoconus

Setting:

National Ophtalmology Centre named after acad. Zarifa Aliyeva.

Methods:

5 patients (10 eyes) participated in the study. All suffered by bilateral keratoconus and corneal crosslinking was performed bilateraly. The mean age at intervention was 14 years. Corneal topography was evaluated preoperatively and postoperatively by WaveLight® Oculyzer™. The mean follow-up period was 13 months.

Results:

The results obtained were the following (mean values): K1 preoperatively 47.26D (SD 4.83) and postoperatively 46.74D (SD 4.36). K2 preoperatively 51.16D (SD 3.56 and postoperatively 50.62D (SD 3.21). Astigmatism preoperatively -5.25D (SD 3.21) and postoperatively -4.05D (SD 4.34). There was a statistically significant difference in the mean corneal curvature (mean values: 49.21D, SD 4.59 preoperatively, 48.68D, SD 4.23 postoperatively) (p<0.01).

Conclusions:

Our findings indicate that corneal crosslinking seems to be a promising option for the management of keratoconus in paediatric patients.
