Comparison between two devices in evaluating corneal thickness changes after cataract surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare Nidek CEM-530 specular microscope and Pentacam HR corneal thickness (CT) changes after cataract surgery.

Setting:

University Eye Clinic, Department of Medicine, Surgery and Dentistry, “Scuola Medica Salernitana”, University of Salerno.

Methods:

136 eyes of 68 patients (32 females) with a mean age of 73.18 ± 8.18years (range 52-89) screened to undergo cataract surgery were analyzed before and one month after the surgical procedure. CT was measured with Nidek CEM-530 specular microscopy at the center of the cornea and with Oculus Pentacam HR Scheimplflug camera at the pupil center (PC), at the corneal apex (CA) and at the thinnest point (TP), in a randomized order at the same day time. CT mean difference between postoperative and preoperative values was evaluated and a paired T test was performed for the  statistical analysis.

Results:

CEM-530 showed a CT mean difference of: 6.06±13.98 µm (p<0.01), Pentacam HR at the PC:  5.43±16.64 µm, (p<0.01), at the CA: 4.72±16.67 µm, (p=0.02) at the TP: 2.37±15.88 µm, (p=0.22). In the fellow eye CEM-530 showed a CT mean difference of -2.32± 8.98 µm, (p=0.04),  Pentacam HR at the PC: -1.41±9.4 µm, (p=0.2) at the CA: -1.65±9.48 µm, (p=0.16) at the TP: -1.85±10.57 µm, (p=0.15).

Conclusions:

Our results show that after 1 month, even if the cornea appears normal, a slight increase of the corneal thickness is still present and that the differences obtained with the two devices are slightly dissimilar, may be related to the different area measured by the two devices.
