Corneal biomechanical metrics in keratoconus and age-matched normal eyes

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess corneal biomechanical parameters in keratoconus and age matched normal patients.

Setting:

Kenia Eye Hospital, Mumbai, India

Methods:

Its a prospective study where subjects diagnosed with keratoconus and those who have undergone corneal biomechanical assessment were included. Eyes with previous corneal surgery, other corneal disease, systemic diseases were excluded. Corneal biomechanical parameters were measured using Corvis ST. Various parameters such as time, velocity, deformation amplitude (DA), deflection amplitude , peak distance (PD) at applanation 1 (A1), 2 (A2) and highest concavity (HC) were recorded. Also Stiffness parameter at A1(SP A1), Ambrosio relational thickness (ARTh), Corvis Bimechanical index (CBI), DA ratio max and integrated radius were recorded and compared.

Results:

At First Applanation, A1 time, velocity were significantly different in normal and KC  (p<0.001). At second applanation, all the paprameters were similar (p>0.05). At highest concavity, in keratoconic corneas, the deformation amplitude, peak distance and deflection area is significantly more as compared to normal corneas. Also there was significant difference was noted in SP A1, ARTh, bIOP, CBI, DA Ratio Max and Integrated Radius  (p<0.05).

Conclusions:

Corneal biomechanical metrics are affected in Keratoconus as compared to age matched normals.
