Corneal curvature varies with axial length

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyse possible relations between corneal curvature parameters from anterior and posterior surface, and spherical aberration (SA), high order aberrations (HOA) and axial length (AL).

Setting:

Miguel Servet University Hospital, Zaragoza, Spain.

Methods:

116 eyes of 67 patients were included in this prospective study. Their AL was examined with optical biometer (IOL Master 700, Carl Zeiss Meditec) and their corneal curvature with Scheimpflug tomograph (Pentacam, Oculus). Patients with any ocular pathologies were excluded from this study. Correlations between AL and simulated keratometric (SimK) values, total keratometry (TK), SA, HOAs in a 4-mm pupil and anterior/posterior ratio (B/F ratio) were analysed.

Results:

Mean age was 65.42±7.21 years old and mean AL was 23.56±1.22 mm. Mean SimK was 43.74±1.31 D, mean TK was 43.73±1.40 D, mean SA was 0.40±0.14 µm, mean HOA in 4-mm pupil was 0.22± 0.13 µm and mean B/F ratio was 82.11%. We found a direct high correlation between SimK and TK. AL was inversely correlated to SimK, TK and HOA in 4-mm pupil. We found low positive correlation between age and SA and with HOA in 4-mm pupil. We found low negative correlation between B/F ratio and SA, and a direct correlation with HOA.

Conclusions:

Corneal features vary according to AL. There is an inverse relation between corneal curvature and AL, and between total HOA and AL.
