Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the long-term outcome of Descemet’s Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK) performed in pediatric patients with Congenital Hereditary Endothelial Dystrophy (CHED).

Setting:

this Study was conducted in King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Methods:

Retrospective study of consecutive patients with histopathological diagnosis of CHED who underwent DSAEK at our center between January 2008 till December 2016. Patients with age of 18 years or less and at least two years follow up were included in the study.  Main outcome measures were graft clarity, complications and repeated surgery.

Results:

There were total of 26 eyes of 17 patients. Median age at surgery was 8.2 years with median follow up of 5.6 years. At last follow 88.5% of DSAEK grafts were clear. No intra-operative complications were encountered. Post-operative complications were mainly lenticule detachment that developed within 1 month after surgery in seven (26.9%) eyes. Repeat graft was needed in 2 eyes. There was no Graft rejection or corneal infection post-operative.

Conclusions:

Endothelial keratoplasty is a safe alternative to conventional penetrating keratoplasty in CHED.
