Abstract Details

Purpose:

To measure the epithelium thickness in normal corneas and in corneas with keratoconus.

Setting:

In University Eye Hospital “Prof. Pashev” we performed a prospective study.

Methods:

We examined and compared 78 normal eyes and 20 eyes with keratoconus using the “ETM” software of our OCT system.

Results:

We found that corneal epithelium is significantly thinner over the steepest zone in keratoconic eyes compared to the healthy controls. On the other hand the epithelium is thicker over the flatter zone. In more advanced cases we observed the formation of the so called “doughnut shape”.

Conclusions:

„ETM“ analysis are with good repeatability as well as in healthy patients and in patients with keratoconus. The changes in the corneal epithelium found with „ETM” are a reliable method for diagnosis of early keratoconus.
