Severe dry eye following bariatric surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report a 37 year-old female who experienced severe dry eye following bariatric surgery.

Setting:

Ege University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, Izmir, Turkey.

Methods:

The patient who underwent bariatric surgery 4 months earlier and lost 30 kilogram following surgery came with the complaints of dry eye OU. Best corrected visual acuity was 0.4 OU. Schirmer 1 was 3 mm, break-up time was 2 seconds, Oxford fluorescein staining was Grade 2 in OU. OSDI score was 72.5.

Results:

Topical sodium hyaluronate, cyclosporine, loteprednol were initiated. Endocrinology consultation was performed. The patient was put on supplementation treatment for malabsorption. After 3 months best corrected visual acuity was 1.0 OU with no corneal staining. The Schirmer 1 was 8 mm, tear-film break-up time was 6 seconds OU.

Conclusions:

Bariatric surgery might ocular complications especially dry eye. Pre- and post-surgical follow-up of these patients by endocrinologists for possible malabsorption and related complications is mandatory. Ophthalmologists should also be aware of these probable complications and should take immediate action.
