Effect of topical Omega-3 fatty acids on ocular surface and tear film in Sjogren’s dry eye

Abstract Details

Purpose:

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of topical omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (OLPFA) (Remogen® Trb Chemedica, Germany)  on ocular surface parameters and tear film thickness in patients with Sjogren’s syndrome suffering from dry eye.

University of Health Sciences Ankara Numune Research and Training Hospital

Methods:

Fifty six eyes of 28 patients with Sjogren’s syndrome having moderate to severe dry eyes were reviewed retrospectively. Both eyes of the patients were assigned to receive topical OLPFA for 3 months in addition to artificial tears (sodium hyaluronate, carbomer) and cyclosporin A. Ocular surface disease index (OSDI), tear film thickness using anterior segment optic cohorence tomography,  conjunctival redness, Schirmer I, tear break up time (TBUT) and fluorescein corneal staining according to Oxford scale were evaluated at baseline and third month.

Results:

Patients’ mean age was 52.5±13.2 years ( 23 female, 5 male). The OSDI score,  conjunctival redness were statistically significantly lower at 3 months after OLPFA treatment compared to baseline (p=0.001). There was no significant  improvement in tear film thickness, Schirmer-I test, and Oxford score after 3 months of topical OLPFA treatment compared to baseline (p >0.05 ).

Conclusions:

Topical Omega-3 fatty acids improves subjective symptoms associated with dry eye syndrome in patients with Sjogren’s disease and decrease conjunctival redness but  does not effectively improve tear film stability and tear film thickness.
