Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present the results compiled in the Keratoconus IBERIA database, in order to investigate keratoconus in Spain and Portugal in a variety of topics from diagnosis to surgical treatment of corneal ectatic diseases.

Setting:

Division of Ophthalmology, Miguel Hernández University, Alicante, Spain. VISSUM INNOVATION, Alicante, Spain.

Methods:

Clinical data have been gathered in Spain and Potugal from 10 collaborating centers: VISSUM, Ramón y Cajal Hospital, Barraquer Clinic, IOBA, Servet Hospital, Navarra University Clinic, Novovisión Dr. Gutierrez Clinic, Murcia General Hospital, Coimbra University Hospital and San Carlos Clinic Hospital. The data have always been sent encrypted, with a view to respect and comply with the Data Protection Law, to VISSUM Alicante for more than 10 years, and these clinical data were included in the general database.

Results:

A total of 5946 eyes with keratoconus and corneal ectatic diseases have been registered. 4453 cases correspond to keratoconus without any surgical treatment and 1493 cases correspond to keratoconus with surgical treatment. From all the surgically treated keratoconus 12,32% had crosslinking (CXL) treatment, 77,09% had CXL + Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segment (ICRS) treatment and 10,52% had keratoplasty treatment. The analysis of this database allowed us to improve the diagnostic and treatment of patients with keratoconus. All these results have been published in nine papers and nine communications to congresses.

Conclusions:

These data are available on request and with the agreement of the specific committee for research studies. All interested centers can contribute and expand the database by sending a formal request. If you have any questions or your institution is interested in collaborating, please contact the Keratoconus IBERIA database Director, Dr. Alió, (jl.alio@umh.es).
