Abstract Details
Purpose:
To analyze the results after a two-year use of scleral contact lenses (SCL) as a therapeutic option in patients with an ocular surface or corneal pathology
Setting:
Cruces University Hospital, Basque Country, Spain.
Methods:
A retrospective study was performed including 60 patients with any type of corneal or ocular surface pathology and with no improvement of their visual acuity (VA) while usingspectacles or corneal contact lenses.
We assessed their improvement in (VA) while using SCL and analyzed which surgeries were possibly prevented or deferred, considering the therapeutic options based on their underlying pathology.
Results:
We studied 97 eyes from 60 patients with an underlying ocular surface or corneal pathology, keratokonus being the most common pathology (40%). The mean VA prior to the use of SCL was LogMAR 0.4±0.35 while the mean VA with SCL was LogMAR 0.11±0.13, which represents an average improvement of 15 letters. Moreover, we found that 50.5% of the patients did not have other available treatments, while the remaining 49.5% prevented or deferred any type of surgical procedure.
Conclusions:
SCL are a useful option for corneal and ocular surface pathology, improving significantly the VA of patients by deferring or preventing any possible surgery.
