Abstract Details
Purpose:
To present a case report of a bilateral exposure keratitis secondary to ectropion due to lamellar ichthyosis.
Setting:
Ophthalmology Department, Korgialeneio-Benakeio Hellenic Red Cross Hospital Athens Greece.
Methods:
A 76-year-old woman presented as an outpatient to the corneal department of our clinic with a painless, progressive diminution of vision in both eyes over a period of four months. Generalized dry scaly lesions with hyperkeratosis of the palms and soles, suggestive of lamellar ichthyosis were present. On ocular examination, bilateral, non cicatricial ectropion followed by exposure keratitis of late stage was found. Systemic use of retinoids , in combination with topical lubrication as well as (topical) use of Vitamin A and Cyclosporine A was recommended.
Results:
A clinical association between exposure keratitis due to ectropion and lamellar ichthyosis was made and appropriate treatment (systemic and topical) was commenced.
Conclusions:
Regular ophthalmological consultations of patients with lamellar ichthyosis, as well as systemic and topical use of retinoids and Cyclosporine A play a leading role in the delay of the progression of the ocular surface disorders and ultimately in preventing the need of corneal transplantation.
