Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the induced astigmatism in the surgeon in training with temporal approach or at 12 o'clock

Setting:

Hospital Poliambulanza Foundation of Brescia, director Vincenzo Miglio

Methods:

224 patients underwent cataract surgery by the same surgeon from 2016 to 2018. For all the incision was 2.2 mm at 12 o'clock was performed in 100 patients, while in the other 124 the cut was performed temporally. Pre and post operative astigmatism was evaluated by IOL Master 700, considering only patients with astigmatism max of 1.25 D sr. Patients were divided into 3 categories that followed the surgeon's experience

Results:

The mean pre-operative astigmatism of the 3 categories was: 0.68D, 0.74D, 0.43D respectively. The first group of patients with cutoff at 12 to 1 month showed a mean astigmatism AR of 0.52D, the second group AR 0.27, the third group of 0.72 SR. The first group of pieces with a temporal cut showed: 0.65D sr, the second of 0.85D SR, the third of 0.53D SR

Conclusions:

In our experience the calculation of the SIA becomes reliable and overlapping when the training phase is completed, while in a first phase the temporal approach is indicative of a better control of astigmatism
