Efficacy of XEN gel implant in combined XEN-phacoemulsification surgery in primary open-angle glaucoma patients

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the effectiveness of the XEN45 Gel Stent implant for surgical treatment of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) with cataract.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Adana City Hospital, Adana, Turkey.

Methods:

Fifteen eyes with POAG and cataract underwent combined Phaco-XEN implantation with subconjunctival mitomycin C injection. The procedure was performed under local anesthesia, and the XEN procedure was performed after completing phacoemulsification. Follow-up visits included assessment of intraocular pressure (IOP), visual acuity, and complications.

Results:

Best corrected visual acuity was 0.32±0.4 before surgery and 0.77±0.15 at the postoperative 6th month. Preoperative IOP was 18.4±3.4 mmHg with an average of 3.1 drugs; postoperative mean IOP values were 11.2±2.7 mmHg on day 1, 13.4±3.2 mmHg at first week, 16.2±3.1 mmHg at first month, and 17.8±2.3 mmHg at 6th month. Mean number of medications decreased by 93.75% postoperatively. One eye (6.6%) required needling during postoperative follow-up, and the XEN implant was dislocated into the anterior chamber in one eye (6.6%).

Conclusions:

XEN45 Gel Stent implantation is an effective surgical treatment that lowers IOP with few complications. Cataract surgery combined with XEN implantation resulted in a significant IOP reduction in eyes with POAG.
