Abstract Details
Purpose:
To establish the prevalence of corneal astigmatism in post excimer laser kerato-refractive surgery patients.
Setting:
Ashford Advanced Eye Care, Adelaide, Australia
Methods:
Keratometric values were recorded preoperatively and 3 months postoperatively using Scheimpflug-based corneal tomography (Precisio; iVIS Technology, Taranto, Italy). Corneal astigmatism values pre and post excimer laser kerato-refractive surgery were calculated and compared.
Results:
The mean corneal astigmatism found for 203 consecutive post refractive surgery patients was 0.97D, standard deviation (SD) 0.6. Astigmatism of 0.75D or more was found in 57.63%, and astigmatism of 1.0D or more was found in 39.9%. The mean corneal astigmatism found before the surgery was 0.92D, SD 0.63.
Conclusions:
This demonstrates that the prevalence of eyes that may benefit from toric intraocular lens implantation at the time of cataract surgery in patients who have undergone excimer laser keratorefractive surgery is similar to the prevalence in the general population as described in the literature.
