Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of this paper is to present 5 cases of cataract surgery among patients with previous radial keratotomy (RK).

Setting:

Nowadays the number of post-RK patients who need a cataract extraction is rising due to their aging. This surgery is considered to be challenging due to risk of the corneal scars dehiscence.

Methods:

Under supervision there were 5 patients (7 eyes) aged 58-69 with previous (15-19 years ago) 16 incisions RK. Phacoemulsification with the temporal side main incision and precautionary applied suture across the RK scar adjacent to the tunnel was carried out to all patients. Flow was setted to 28 mL/min, vacuum to 300 mm Hg, US power was 20%, corneal tunnel was sutured. Corneal sutures were removed 14 days after the operation.

Results:

There were no intra- and postoperative dehiscences of the post keratotomy scars among all patients.

Conclusions:

Although cataract surgery among patients with previous radial keratotomy are challenging they can be well managed by proper precautions.
