Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present an adult patient with refractive accommodative esotropia corrected by clear lens extraction and trifocal IOL implantation.

Setting:

Instituto Oftalmologico Hoyos. Barcelona (Spain)

Methods:

40-year-old female patient with refractive accommodative esotropia. Refraction was RE +7.5 -1.25 x 110º and LE +8.75 -2.5 x 60º with a corrected vision of 20/20 both eyes. She had 40 prism diopters (PD) of esotropia LE without correction and 5 PD of microesotropia LE with the refraction. We performed clear lens extraction and we implanted an AcrySof IQ PanOptix trifocal IOL of +27.0 D in the RE and a PanOptix toric T6 trifocal IOL of +28.0 D in the LE.

Results:

After surgery the patient achieved orthotropia for near vision and a microesotropia of 5 PD for far vision. Two months after surgery there was a residual refractive error of +1.5 -1 x 110º in RE and +1.5 in LE. We performed a PRK with excimer laser to correct the residual error. Final uncorrected vision was 20/20 for far and near.

Conclusions:

Multifocal IOL is a good treatment to correct refractive accommodative esotropia for patients at a presbyopic age.
