Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare outcomes between patients that underwent immediate sequential cataract surgery (ISBCS) and delayed sequential cataract surgery (DSBCS).
Setting:
Optical Express, United Kingdom
Methods:
Outcomes of the last available visit were compared between ISBCS (n=274) and DSBCS (n=986) patients who underwent cataract surgery or a refractive lens exchange with an implantation of a multifocal intraocular lens. Refractive, visual and patient reported outcomes, as well as adverse events rates were compared between the two groups
Results:
At the last available visit, there was no significant difference in achieved binocular uncorrected distance and near visual acuity (distance VA: -0.04±0.09logMAR ISBCS vs -0.04±0.10logMAR DSBCS, p=0.65, near VA: 0.24±0.15logMAR ISBCS vs 0.22±0.14logMAR DSBCS, p=0.11). There was no difference in patient’s satisfaction with the day of surgery flow or satisfaction with surgeon’s care. Equal portion of patients would recommend the procedure to family/friends (92.4% in each group). There was no difference in intraoperative or postoperative adverse events.
Conclusions:
Both procedures were equally safe and there was no statistically significant difference in clinical and patient reported outcomes.
