Abstract Details
Purpose:
To know the magnitude of astigmatism in the Indian population
Setting:
Cataract Service, L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, Telangana, India
Methods:
The eyes of patients undergoing cataract surgery between August 2017 till March 2018 were included. Patients having any co-existing ocular pathology or previous eye surgeries which could alter the astigmatism were excluded. Out of the 7459 eyes which had low coherence reflectometry biometry documented in the electronic medical record, 1255 eyes were excluded from analysis. The patients were divided into 3 groups based on their age as group 1 being those between 4th and 6th decade, group 2 having those between 6th and 8th decade and the last group consisting of those more than 80 years old.
Results:
Mean age was 61.389.72 years. 52.06% patients were male and 47.94% were female. Right eye was operated in 51.74% and 48.26% patients got the left eye operated. Against the rule astigmatism was seen to increase progressively from group 1 to 3 and with the rule astigmatism was seen to decrease as the age advanced. Maximum number of eyes (14.68%) having an astigmatism of more than 1.25 dioptres was seen in group 2.
Conclusions:
There was a need to look into the astigmatism post cataract surgery in close to 22% of the patients coming for a routine cataract surgery in order to give them an optimal visual result post-surgery. This study also highlights the need for astigmatism correction measures intra operatively in the form of limbal relaxing incisions and toric intraocular lenses.
