Abstract Details
Purpose:
to study the epidemiology of post-traumatic cataracts and to evaluate the pediatric ocular trauma score as a tool for predicting functional outcomes after surgery.
Setting:
ophtalmology department, Mohammed VI university hospital, Marrakech, Morocco
Methods:
This is a retrospective study of children operated for post-traumatic cataract between January 2014 and August 2018. Visual funcion results were predicted using the Pediatric Ocular Trauma Score (POTS), a score derived from the ocular trauma score (OTS) but adjusted for the age and location of the wound. Results were predicted using OTS and POTS and predictions were compared to actual results using statistical tests.
Results:
The trauma was perforating in 56% of cases. The initial visual acuity was LP- for 8 cases, between 1/200 and 19/200 in 71 cases. Cataract was broken in 40% of cases. Emergency treatment consists of suturing the corneal wound in 95 cases. The surgical procedure consists of a phacoaspiration, a vitrectomy was performed in 15 cases.145 cases were implanted including 121 in the bag and 24 cases in the sulcus, 10 cases were not implanted. All children under 12 years old received amblyopia treatment. Final visual acuity was LP - in 7 cases, and between 20/200 and 20/50 in 68 cases.
Conclusions:
The final visual acuity observed compared to that predicted by POTS and OTS showed a significant difference in favor of POTS.
