Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate safety and efficacy of a 6.5-mm hexagonal expansion ring during cataract surgery.
Setting:
Rothschild Foundation, Paris, France
Methods:
Prospective series of 22 eyes operated by phacoemulsification. Preoperative iris dilation was <6 mm in all cases. Iris dilatation was measured intraoperatively before and after ring implantation. Iris integrity was also evaluated intraoperatively and 1 month after the surgery.
Results:
Mean intraoperative iris dilation was 5.6 +/- 0.2 mm after expansion ring placement. Iris integrity was respected in all cases during and after the surgery. No side effects were noted.
Conclusions:
The expansion ring used in this study appeared to be safe and effective to provide stable and sufficient dilation during cataract surgery. A larger series of patient is necessary to validate our preliminary clinical results.
