Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate clinical characteristics of the cataract in patients with XFS, as well as the evaluation of the surgery techniques for it’s managing.
Setting:
This prospective randomized study was performed in Clinic of ophthalmology, Clinical centre Kragujevac, Serbia.
Methods:
This hospital-based prospective randomized trial included 60 eyes from 60 patients who underwent phacoemulsification, divided into three groups according to the stadium of cataract development-early, middle and late-stage. Slit-lamp examination, IOP measurement, and fundus examination were performed for every patient. The incidences of intraoperative and early postoperative complications of phacoemulsification were compared, and differences in the outcomes of phacoemulsification were evaluated. We also compared ultrasound time used during cataract surgery for every patient.
Results:
Our results indicated that the mean ultrasound time, cumulative dissipated energy, incidence of corneal edema, and wound burn in the late stage group were significantly higher than in other examined groups, (p<0.05). The incidence of zonular dehiscence, capsular rupture, vitreous loss were statistically significant higher in the late stage group compared to early and mild stage groups, (p<0.05). Early intraocular pressure rise was significant higher in the middle and late stage groups compare to early stage group. We also noticed that visual acuity after cataract surgery was significant better in the early and mild stage group, (p<0.05).
Conclusions:
Cataract surgery in patients with XFS is very complicated, if we include all potential intraoperative and postoperative complications. Cataract surgery performed in earlier stages of the cataract development gives chance for better visual acuity and life quality of the patients. According to our results, we can pronounce cataract in patients with XFS as complicated form of the cataract.
