Abstract Details
Purpose:
To describe novel technique of scleral tunnel demarcation in manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS) using trypan blue dye (TBD).
Setting:
Tertiary Eye Care Institute in Central India
Methods:
After creating scleral tunnel with crescent blade, trypan blue dye (0.06%) is injected in the tunnel to stain the inner and outer lips. Once the tunnel is demarcated, keratome is used for anterior chamber (AC) entry. In case the blue demarcated tunnel shows inadequate side pockets, lateral extension of tunnel is done on both sides. In case the corneal part of tunnel is narrow, extension of tunnel into cornea is done before AC entry.
Results:
TBD was used in 86 consecutive cases of MSICS. Use of TBD helps in proper MSICS tunnel demarcation. It helped in judging exact size, shape of tunnel, extent of corneal entry, side pocket adequacy. It helped in preventing improper tunnel related complications by improving visualization. There were no tunnel related complications in our case series.
Conclusions:
Use of Trypan Blue dye is safe and effective way of tunnel demarcation in MSICS for preventing tunnel related complications.
