Abstract Details
Purpose:
To review the rare complication of toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS) following cataract surgery
Setting:
Singleton Hospital, Swansea, Wales.
Methods:
Two patients presented to eye casualty 24 hours following their routine cataract operations with TASS.
Results:
The patients presented with blurred vision in their eyes. They complained that they there was a "white out" loss of vision. On examination, they had cloudy corneas, anterior chamber cells, hypopyon and anterior chamber fibrin deposits. Both patients were treated with topical steroid therapy and monitored closely in the first few days after surgery. The inflammatory process settled in the following two days and continued to do so in the upcoming weeks. The corneas however remained cloudy and the patients remain under review. A root cause analysis was also performed to identify the cause of TASS in these cases.
Conclusions:
TASS is a rare but well known complication of cataract surgery. Here we discuss the potential causes of this condition, how to avoid such complications, how to manage TASS and what could be the long term consequences of this disease entity.
