Abstract Details
Purpose:
The viscoextraction technique is an effective recovery method after the posterior capsule rupture. However, there are still unknown about the properties of ophthalmic visco-elastic devices (OVDs) and the extraction effects. In this study, we evaluate the types of OVDs and extraction effects using porcine eyes.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Dokkyo Medical University, Tochigi, Japan.
Methods:
Cohesive (Opegan and Opegan Hi, Santen), dispersive (Shellgan, Santen), mix (Discovisc, Alcon) and viscoadaptive (HealonV, Johnson and Johnson) OVDs were prepared. Porcine eyes were set up under microscope and 5.7mm incisions were made using implant knives. Two beads (2.1 x 1.6mm) that were artificial nucleus were placed in the anterior chambers. After that the beads were extracted using different OVDs and the extraction times were measured.
Results:
The beads extracted times of Opegan, Opegan Hi, Shellgan, Discovisc and HealonV were 5.01±0.84, 3.99±0.70, 8.55±2.66, 7.39±3.17, and 8.74±1.72sec respectively. The extracted time is shortest using Opegan Hi.
Conclusions:
When performing the viscoextraction techniques, it is necessary to select a suitable OVD.
