Abstract Details
Purpose:
Comparison of cumulative dissipated energy (CDE) level in phacoemulsification in eyes with pseudoexfoliation and normal cataracts.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Ulucanlar Eye Education and Research Hospital, Ankara, Turkey
Methods:
A total of 152 eyes of 152 patient underwent phacoemulsification surgery were evaluated. Patient were divided into two group either with or without pseudoexfoliation (PEX) material based on slit lamp examination. Each patient operated by same surgeon with divide and conquer technique. Patients who needed iris retractor hooks and capsular tension ring were not included in this study. CDE calculated by phaco device according to following formula: (Phacotime × average phaco power) + ( torsional time × average torsional amplitude). Each patients’ CDE values were compared between two groups. Mann-Whitney U test was used for statistical comparison of CDE values.
Results:
PEX group consist of 31 eyes and normal cataract had 121 eyes. The mean age was 64.29 (min 34 max 83 years) in PEX group and 73.35 (min 62 max 90 years) in control patients.. The mean CDE was 11.51 ± 5.33 (min 4.78- max 25.92) in PEX group and 11.93±7,87 (min 3.21- max 50.40) in normal cataract group. The difference was statistically insignificant (p= 0.586) No one had any complication such as posterior capsule rupture, vitreous loose during the surgery and IOL subluxation or decentralization postoperatively.
Conclusions:
Presence of PEX does not effect on the cumulative dissipated energy level in phacoemulsification surgery in eyes does not need extra manipulation due to small pupil and zonular insufficiency.
