Abstract Details
Purpose:
to describe two cases of intraoperative opacification of Acrylic hydrophilic IOLs during cataract surgery
Setting:
A single-center: Militray University Hospital of Constantine, Algeria.
Methods:
A 56 and 25-year-old women were enrolled to perform cataract surgery in our department. Both of them underwent phacoemulsification through a 2,2-mm micro-incision and insertion of an in-the-bag intraocular lens Acrylic hydrophilic IOL
Results:
The surgery was achieved without complication, Once the Acrylic hydrophilic IOL is injected in the anterior chamber, it was followed by a rapid, homogenous and complete opacification of the lens. The first patient was explanted and implanted with another IOL. The review of this case confirms the existence of such problem preoperatively. One week later, the second patient was operated for posterior capsular cataract and implanted with an Acrylic hydrophilic IOL.The same phenomenon was observed (opacification of the lens). This IOL was left in the bag, 24 hours later it became transparent. The best-corrected vision one month later was 20/20.
Conclusions:
The self-resolution of opacification of this type of IOL related to their cold storage could be a useful notion for cataract surgeons. Delaying IOL surgical explantation of those patients seems to be a judicious decision.
