Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate and compare posterior capsule opacification (PCO) between intraocular lenses (IOL) of two different platforms: Tecnis (Johnson&Johnson) and Clareon (Alcon) after a six-month period of follow-up.
Setting:
Miguel Servet University Hospital, Zaragoza, Spain.
Methods:
Observational study enrolling patients with two types of IOL: Tecnis ZCB00 (group 1) and Clareon (group 2). The required axial length (AL) was between 22 and 25 mm. Patients were excluded in case of amblyopia, ocular pathologies and previous intraocular treatment or surgery. They were examined one and six months after cataract surgery. Visual acuity (VA) was measured and slit-lamp photographies after pharmacological mydriasis were taken by the same technician and using the same method. PCO was classified according to intensity, localization and area by three ophthalmologists. Intensity was classified into 5 stages, and areas were measured using ImageJ (NIH).
Results:
18 eyes (18 patients) were enrolled in each group. Mean age was 72.78±6.49 (p=0.63). There were no differences in AL (p=0.83) or VA (p=0.51). The first month, mean intensity was 0.94±0.54 in group 1 and 1.17±0.71 in group 2 (p=0.36), mean area was 0.01±0.01% (2 patients) in group 1 and 0.07±0.06% (6 patients) in group 2 (p=0.29). The sixth month, mean intensity was 1.56±0.71 in group 1 and 1.61±0.61 in group 2 (p=0.72), mean area was 0.03±0.03% (8 patients) in group 1 and 0.06±0.07% (10 patients) in group 2 (p=0.46).
Conclusions:
Some degree of PCO already appears at the first postoperative month in both platforms. Despite no statistical differences, Clareon platform tends to a higher PCO than Tecnis regarding intensity and area.
