Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate visual outcomes, intraocular optical quality and visual satisfaction of patients bilaterally implanted with the trifocal PanOptix (Alcon) intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting:

Oftalvist CIO Jerez, Jerez de la Frontera, Cadiz, Spain

Methods:

In this prospective study, 40 eyes of 20 patients were implanted with the new AcrySof IQ PanOptix IOL. The following visual outcomes were evaluated: binocular uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), best-corrected distance VA (BCDVA), distance corrected intermediate VA (DCIVA) at 60 cm, and distance corrected near VA (DCNVA) at 40 cm, preferred reading distance with BCD and VA at that distance, defocus curve, mesopic and photopic contrast sensitivity, photic phenomena by halometry and root-mean-square (RMS) of total high order aberrations for 3-mm pupil by ray tracing technology. The follow-up was 6 months after surgery.

Results:

The visual outcomes for Acrysof IQ PanOptix IOL were respectively as follows: UDVA:0.00±0.03 LogMAR; CDVA:-0.03±0.03 logMAR; DCIVA:0.06±0.10 logMAR; DCNVA:0.04±0.06 logMAR.Preferred reading distances and VA at this distance were 37.0±4.6 cm and 0.09±0.08 LogMAR. Eighty and 97.5 % of eyes reached a VA of 20/20 for UDVA and CDVA, respectively.Defocus curve provided VAs equal or better to 0.30 LogMAR between defocus levels of +1 to -3.5 D.Contrast sensitivity values were within normal range for 1.5, 3 and 6 cycles/degree.The disturbance index obtained with the halometer was 0.451 ± 0.127.The RMS of HOA was 0.10 ± 0.06 mm.

Conclusions:

The AcrySof IQ Panoptix IOL provides excellent visual outcomes at distance, intermediate and near with good reading distance and quality of vision with low visual disturbances after cataract surgery
