Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the outcome of Small Incision Lenticule extraction (SMILE) in children with myopic anisometropia.

Setting:

Dr. Agarwal's Refractive and Cornea Foundation, Dr. Agarwal's Eye Hospital, Chennai, India

Methods:

This prospective interventional case series included 7 children with myopic anisometropia. SMILE surgery was performed in all children under IV sedation.

Results:

Mean age was 10.29 +/-3.73 years. All surgeries were uneventful with no suction loss. Pre and post-operative UCVA were 0.03 +/- 0.02 and 0.34 +/- 0.14 respectively. BCVA improved from 0.41 +/-0.16 to 0.67 +/- 0.26.  Average follow-up was 18 ± 13.02 months. Mean pre and post-operative spherical equivalent was 11.09 +/- 2.56D and 2.16 +/- 1.90 D (p<0.0001). Mean pre and post-perative pachymetry was 536 +/- 46.18 and 395 +/- 54.95 microns respectively.

Conclusions:

Pediatric SMILE may be done for a minority of children. However, care needs to be taken during surgery.
