Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the clinical outcomes of a large sample after subjects who had underwent small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and femtosecond laser-assisted laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) for 12 months result.

Setting:

Beijing Aier-Intech Eye Hospital, Beijing, China.

Methods:

Retrospective comparative study. All patients recruited had a preoperative spherical equivalent (SE) refraction up to -10.0D myopia and myopic astigmatism from -0.25 to -6.0D. Clinical outcomes were recorded at 1day, 1week, 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. A Generalized Linear Mixed Model was used to compare uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), refractive outcome of spherical equivalent(SE) and cylinder, efficacy index,  root mean square of 3 mm (RMS3), root mean square of 5 mm (RMS5) in the two methods of surgery.

Results:

The study enrolled 4807 patients, 3042 eyes in FS-LASIK and 1764 eyes in SMILE. The mean attempted SE was -5.82±1.94SD and -5.80±1.86SD in FS-LASIK and SMILE (P=0.6828), the mean cylinder was -0.76D ±0.62SD in FS-LASIK and -0.78D±0.64SD in SMILE (P=0.1833). 12 months postoperatively between the two groups: UCVA (P=0.2286); efficacy index (P=0.1871), postoperative cylinder (P=0.055), RMS3 (P=0.05) and RMS5 (P=0.6232) were similar; while the mean SE was within ±0.50 D in 69.68% and ±1.00 D in 91.4% for FS-LASIK, within ±0.50 D in 64.43% and ±1.00 D in 88.05% for SMILE, the mean SE was difference (P=0.0011).

Conclusions:

Small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and femtosecond laser-assisted laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) had similar efficacious procedures for the correction of myopia and outcome in UCVA, RMS3 and RMS5; while FS-LASIK group performed a better refraction in 12 months postoperatively.
