Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the level of satisfaction and ocular symptoms of presbyopes and non presbyopic patients 4 to 5 years after LASER refractive surgery (PRK or Femto-LASIK) with the Zeiss Meditec Mel 80 Excimer laser. To test for a correlation between satisfaction levels and visual outcomes or ocular symptoms.
Setting:
Iris Ophthalmology Clinic , Quebec, Canada
Methods:
This retrospective study included patients selected according to their date of surgery (between January 2013 and September 2014) using the databases of the clinic. To subjectively evaluate satisfaction and visual symptoms, patients answered a questionnaire (sent via Survey Monkey) consisting of 28 multiple choi28 questionnaires were rejectedce questions related to their satisfaction, ocular symptoms, quality of vision at distance and near, as well as their need to wear glasses or contact lenses. The SPSS software was used for statistical analysis.
Results:
The response rate was 24,3% (148/609). Only 3,3% of patients were more than 45 years old and 2,5% required glasses for reading. According to patients’ questionnaires enhancement rate was 11,7%. Overall satisfaction rate (assessed by the computation of 9 questions) was 81,7% but the vast majority of patients (92,5%) would not hesitate to do it again. A significant association between the subjective quality of distance vision and the satisfaction was established by the Spearman coefficient of correlation (0,596, p<0,001). 5,1% of patients reported dryness symptoms that persist. Difficulties in night driving was reported by 8,5% of patients.
Conclusions:
In this group of patients, at least 4 years after LASER refractive surgery, the overall satisfaction level (81,7%) is somewhat lower to the one reported in shorter term by previous studies. Although, the vast majority of patients (92,5%) would not hesitate to do it again. Further studies should include more presbyopes to better document the relationship between satisfaction and age.
