Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the influence of narrow anterior chamber (AC) in the residual sphere and astigmatism after phacoemulsification cataract surgery with multifocal intraocular lens.

Setting:

Private practice clinic.

Methods:

This retrospective interventional case series enrolled 244 patients who underwent phacoemultification multifocal intraocular lens implantation with and without toricity. Preoperative AC depth and residual sphere and astigmatism at 1 month follow-up examination were assessed. Univariate analyses were used to investigate the effect of narrow AC (less than 2.6 mm) in the postoperative results.

Results:

The residual sphere in eyes with narrow AC (18 eyes) was 0.08 diopters (D) in right eyes (RE) and 0.16D in left eyes (LE), meanwhile in eyes without narrow AC was 0.07 and 0.06 respectively, finding no significant differences between both groups (p>0.05). Similar postoperative astigmatism was also found between eyes with narrow AC (0.14 in RE and 0.2 in LE) and non-narrow AC (0.09D in RE and LE) (p>0.05 in both cases).

Conclusions:

Similar results in refractive postoperative errors are found in eyes with and without narrow AC in patients who underwent cataract surgery with multifocal intraocular lens implantation.
