Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare visual outcomes after implantation of intraocular lenses (IOL) of two different platforms: Tecnis ZCB00 (Johnson&Johnson) and Clareon (Alcon), six months after surgery.

Setting:

Hospital Universitario Miguel Servet, Zaragoza, Spain

Methods:

Observational study enrolling 57 eyes of 57 patients implanted with Tecnis IOL, and 65 eyes of 65 patients implanted with Clareon IOL. Inclusion criteria included an axial length (AL) between 22 and 25 mm. Patients were excluded in case of amblyopia, ocular pathologies, previous intraocular treatment or surgery and intra or postoperative complications. The following examinations were performed six months after surgery: visual acuity (VA) with optical correction and under mesopic conditions, CSV-1000E test, OQAS system, Catquest-9SF quality-of-life questionnaire and subjective gradation of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) with slit-lamp pictures taken by the same technician.

Results:

There were no differences in: age (p=0.63), AL (p=0.83), IOL power (p=0.59), mesopic VA (p=0.33), any frequencies of the CSV1000E test (p>0.05), modulation transfer function (MTF) cut-off (p=0.48), Strehl ratio (p=0.32), objective scatter index (OSI) (p=0.39), VA with 100% of contrast sensitivity (CS) (p=0.44), VA with 20% CS (p=0.60) and VA with 9% CS (p=0.40), questions 1 (p=0.84), 2 (p=0.55), 3 (p=0.56), 4 (p=0.09), 6 (p=0.20), 7 (p=0.41), 8 (p=0.66) and 9 (p=0.69), and PCO intensity (p=0.80). There were differences in: question number 5 of the questionnaire (p=0.001) and the total punctuation (p<0.0001).

Conclusions:

There are no differences in PCO and its possible implications to vision between both IOL platforms: Tecnis and Clareon.
