Abstract Details
Purpose:
The aim of the study was to evaluate tear film and ocular surface in diabetic patients before and after cataract surgery.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Sfântul Spiridon Emergency Clinical Hospital, Iași, Romania
Methods:
Prospective, comparative, interventional study on 42 nondiabetic eyes (group 1) and 32 diabetic eyes (group 2) who underwent cataract surgery between July 2017 and October 2018. A comprehensive ocular examination and assessment of tear film break-up time (TBUT), Schirmer I test, lissamine green test, van Bijsterveld index and OSDI (Ocular Surface Disease Index) questionare were conducted in three points: before surgery, after one week and six weeks after surgery, respectively.
Results:
Mean preoperative OSDI score was higher in group 2 (24.53) compared to group 1 (19.50) (p=0.1). OSDI score was 17.83 in group 1 and 25.11 in group 2 (p=0.02) at one week and 16.59 in group 1 and 27.98 in group 2 (p=0.004) at six weeks, respectively. There were no significant statistical differences in group 1 and group 2 with respect to mean Schirmer I test, OSDI and TBUT at any point of the evaluation. One week after surgery, TBUT decreased in both groups (p>0.05) to increase six weeks after surgery at a level similar to the preoperative one.
Conclusions:
Cataract surgery induces more important dry eye symptoms in diabetic patients. On short-term both diabetic and nondiabetic patients have transitory altered tear film parameters after cataract surgery.
