Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the distance, intermediate, and near visual outcomes and monocular defocus curve of a next-generation presbyopia-correcting intraocular lens (IOL) to a multifocal IOL.

Setting:

12 sites in the United States of America

Methods:

A prospective, masked, and randomized study of patients undergoing cataract surgery with bilateral IOL implantation with best-corrected distance visual acuity (VA) potential of 20/30 or better. The test lens was the TECNIS® Synergy IOL and the control lens was the TECNIS® Multifocal +3.25 D IOL. Far, intermediate, and near visual acuity testing was performed under photopic conditions at 4 m, 66 cm, and 40 cm. Defocus curve testing was conducted from +2.0 D to -4.0 D in 0.5 D increments with minus lenses at 1 and 6 months.

Results:

148 patients (76 test lens, 72 control lens) were analyzed. Monocular first-eyes best-corrected VA at far, and distance-corrected intermediate and near were -0.001, 0.098, and 0.090 logMAR for the test lens and -0.038, 0.219, and 0.101 logMAR for the control lens at 1-month postoperative. The monocular distance-corrected defocus curve of the first-eyes at 1 month showed both groups with similar VA at far, and the test lens had up to 1.5 line improvement at intermediate and up to 1 line improvement at near.

Conclusions:

The next-generation presbyopia-correcting IOL provided excellent VA at far, intermediate, and near. Defocus curve testing showed full range of vision with near closer than 40 cm while providing intermediate and distance vision comparable or better than the multifocal IOL.
