Purpose:
To study visual outcomes of a new refractive intraocular lens (IOL) with a continuous transitional focus implanted bilaterally
Setting:
Oftalvist CIO Jerez, Jerez de la Frontera, Spain
Methods:
The new IOL (Precizon Presbyopic model 570 A1, Ophtec) was implanted bilaterally in patients undergoing cataract/lens exchange. Six months after implantation of the IOL, uncorrected visual acuities at distance (UDVA), intermediate (UIVA) and near (UNVA) were evaluated. Additionally, binocular defocus curve and contrast sensitivity (photopic and mesopic) were measured and objective visual quality was evaluated by the means of a quality of vision questionnaire and patient’s satisfaction questionnaire.
Results:
The visual outcomes showed good VAs at all distance tested (UDVA of 0.03±0.02 LogMAR, UIVA of 0.13±0.07 LogMAR and UNVA of 0.29±0.10 LogMAR). The defocus curve remained quite stable along a wide interval (equal o better than 0.30 LogMAR between 0 and -3 D defocus). There were no differences between photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity curves. The quality of vision questionnaire showed low rates of visual disturbances with high patient’s satisfaction.
Conclusions:
The new refractive IOL with a continuous transitional focus provides functional uncorrected visual acuity at distance, intermediate and near with good contrast sensitivity with high levels of spectacle independence and few visual disturbance symptoms. This IOL provides surgeons with a further IOL alternative to multifocal IOLs.
