Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate efficacy of descemets membrane endothelial keratoplastyto treat  corneal edemaassociated withirido corneal endothelial syndrome and report 6 cases which underwent DMEK for ICE syndrome.

Setting:

Sankara eye hospital, Coimbatore, India

Methods:

In this retrospective, consecutive, interventional case series, the corneal endothelium was selectively replaced by the DMEK technique in eyes with ICE syndrome. six eyes were included with minimum 18 months follow up. Descemet membrane and endothelium were stripped from the recipient and DMEK donor button was inserted and attached with air bubble. At followup eyes were evaluated for graft attachment, corneal clarity, endothelial count, visual acuity.

Results:

In all the six cases corneal edema was resolved and corneal clarity was maintained with no signs of graft rejection or graft detachment at last follow up. An average BCVA oflogmar 0.2 was achieved and maintained. An average 18 % endothelial cell density decline was noticed comparable to DMEK in normal eyes.

Conclusions:

DMEK can successfully treat corneal edema and associated visual loss caused by ICE syndrome with similar predictable results as DMEK in normal eyes. Visual recovery is rapidwith nil refractive change. This is the first ever case report or series of DMEK in ICE syndrome so far.
