Abstract Details
Purpose:
To present the results compiled in the biomedical explants IBERIA Biobank.
Setting:
Division of Ophthalmology, Miguel Hernández University, Alicante, Spain. VISSUM INNOVATION, Alicante, Spain.
Methods:
Clinical data have been gathered from 23 collaborating centers: Barraquer Clinic, Navarra University Clinic, Murcia Hospital, Ramón y Cajal Hospital, Vall de Hebron Hospital, IOBA, VISSUM, Novovisión Clinic, Arnau Villanova Hospital, Quirón Hospital, Coimbra University Hospital, Barcelona Clinic, San Carlos Clinic, Navarra Hospital, Dr. Queirós Clinic, Retina Catalan Institute, and Rementería Clinic.
Since more than 10 years, these collaborating centers sent to VISSUM Alicante the explanted material from anterior segment of eye in a totally anonymized way and total agreement with Data Protection Law. These explants are stored in a fixing solution to preserve bio-information.
Results:
The IBERIA Biobank gathers a total of 1454 samples, mainly explanted IOLs (of the total amount recorded 35,48% are phakic lenses and 46,28% are pseudophakic lenses), explanted intracorneal segments (9,76%), other materials (8,45%), and the information relative to the materials removed from the eye.
Nowadays, the development and expansion of the IBERIA Biobank is one of the milestones in the current RETIC project with reference number RD16/0008.
Scientific production: the group has published two thesis, nine papers and nine conference contributions based on the Biobank data.
Conclusions:
One conclusion obtained is that the main causes for IOL explantation are dislocation or decentration followed by incorrect IOL power and IOL opacification.
The IBERIA Biobank is available for the scientific community. These data are available on request and with the agreement of the specific committee for research studies. All interested centers can contribute and broaden the Biobank by sending the explanted samples with the form. If you have any questions or your institution is interested in collaborating, please contact the IBERIA Biobank Director, Dr. Alió, (jl.alio@umh.es) or the IBERIA Biobank (biobanco.iberia@umh.es).
