Quality of image of grating target with a wide-angled viewing system in model eyes implanted with multifocal intraocular lenses

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the quality of the image of a grating target placed in a model eye implanted with diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses(IOLs)  through visualization systems for vitrectomy.

Setting:

Laboratory investigation.

Methods:

A monofocal IOL ZCB00 or a diffractive multifocal IOL( ZKB00, ZLB00 or ZMB00)  was implanted in a fluid-filled model eye. On the posterior surface of the model eye, A United States Air Force resolution target was placed. Image photos were taken with a digital camera through tow types of front lenses, +60D or +128D, of a non-contact wide-angled viewing system(Resight700) attached to a surgical microscope. The contrasts of the gratings were caluclated using a software and compared among IOL models through two different types of front lenses.

Results:

There was no statistical difference in the contrasts of grating images among IOL models through a +128D front lens of a non-contact wide-angled viewing system. However, the contrast of the gratings through a +60D front lens of a non-contact wide-angled viewing system significantly decreased in eyes implanted with all three types of multifocal IOLs.

Conclusions:

Diffractive multifocal IOLs blur the grating target but less with +128D front lens the wide-angle viewing system. With +60D front lens the wide-angle viewing system, it may influence the quality of the contrast of grating images due to its magnification factor and diffractive multifocal optical zone.
