Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare ocular biometric parameters between urban and rural cataract patients in Shanghai,China

Setting:

Cross-sectional study

Methods:

A study of ocular biometry record was performed in cataract patients at least 50 years from an urban hospital or a rural hospital. Ocular biometrical parameters included axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), radius of corneal curvature (K, including steep/flat/average K), astigmatism, axis by using partial coherence laser interferometry (IOLMaster, Zeiss). Only right eye record of each patient was analyzed.

Results:

Ocular biometric data included 2144 urban patients (70.52±10.34 years) and 2339 rural patients (71.07±10.23 years). Mean AL, ACD and K were 24.47±2.49mm, 44.17±1.64D, 3.18±0.59mm in urban patients, while 23.62±1.70mm, 44.49±1.57D, 3.09±0.55mm in rural patients. The urban subject had significant longer axial length, deeper ACD than rural subject (P < 0.01). There was no significant difference in steep-K, flat-K and average K between two groups.Corneal astigmatism was higher in rural patients ( P<0.01), there was more against-the-rule astigmatism in rural patients than urban patients (1.06D, 1.22D, P<0.01).There were no differences in with-the-rule-astigmatism.

Conclusions:

These data of ocular biometric show the difference between the urban and rural old patients. The prevalence of short axial length, shallower anterior chamber and more against-the-rule astigmatism warrant further investigation.
