Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate and compare the accuracy of the Barrett TK formula with other calculation methods for the IOL power prediction after previous corneal refractive surgery.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine, and Eyereum Eye Clinic, Seoul, South Korea.

Methods:

The accuracy of the Barrett TK formula was compared with other IOL power calculation methods including Masket, modified-Masket, Wang-Koch-Maloney, Haigis-L, Shammas, and Barrett True-K formula. Visual acuity measurement, manifest refraction, slit-lamp examination, autokeratometry, corneal topography, and evaluation of corneal wavefront aberration were investigated preoperatively and 1 month after surgery.

Results:

Thirty four eyes that required cataract surgery and had previously undergone refractive surgery, were included in the study. The Barrett TK formula had a significant bigger median absolute refraction prediction error and variances than Barrett True-K, Hagis-L and Shammas methods. Using Barrett TK formula, the percentages of eyes within ±0.50 diopter (D) and ±1.00 D from the target refraction were 29 % and 50 %, respectively.

Conclusions:

The Barrett TK formula was insufficient in IOL power prediction in patients who previously underwent corneal refractive surgery when compared with other formula.
