Abstract Details

Purpose:

Clinical evaluation of optical phenomena after bilateral implantation of different monofocal and multifocal IOLs after cataract or refractive surgery.

Setting:

International Vision Correction Research Centre

Methods:

In this on-going prospective clinical study, 138 patients were examined binocularly: 23 patients with CT Asphina (Carl Zeiss Meditec), 11 patients with Aspira MC 6125AS (HumanOptics), 13 patients with Tecnis Symfony (Johnson & Johnson), 30 patients with Mini WELL (SIFI), 25 patients with AcrySof IQ PanOptix (Alcon), 21 patients with AT LISA Tri (Carl Zeiss Meditec), and 15 patients with FineVision (PhysIOL) Both the size and intensity of the photic phenomena were examined using a computer-based simulator (Halo and Glare Simulator, Eyeland Design Network GmbH, Vreden, Germany) and evaluated on a scale from 0 to 100.

Results:

FineVision (Size: 48,0±19.2; Intensity: 49,8±20,4) and PanOptix (Size: 42,7±18,2; Intensity: 48,4±16,5) showed the highest mean halo size and intensity values. The lowest mean halo values were observed in CT Asphina (Size: 4,3±8,0; Intensity: 13,5±24,0). Concerning the size of glare, Symfony (18,6±21,2) and AT LISA Tri (17,1±15,6) showed the highest mean values. The highest mean values for glare intensity were observed in AT LISA Tri (34,2±22,6), Symfony (31,7±23,3), and Mini WELL (33,3±26,4). Both the lowest mean values for glare size (6,1±11,4) and intensity (11,0±19,5) were found in FineVision.

Conclusions:

Our data indicate that dysphotopsia such as halo and glare occur not only in multifocal, but also in monofocal IOLs. The measured mean values of halo size were lower in the monofocal and Mini WELL EDOF IOLs than in diffractive IOLs. The lowest mean values of glare size and intensity were observed in FineVision IOL.
