Efficacy and safety of femtosecond laser arcuate keratotomy for correction of mixed astigmatism: a six-month follow-up

Abstract Details

Purpose:

to assess the efficacy and safety of femtosecond laser-assisted arcuate keratotomy (FSAK) in the treatment of mixed astigmatism in native eyes.

Setting:

private practice

Methods:

This prospective study included 20 eyes of ten patients who underwent FSAK for mixed astigmatism using the Victus®️ femtosecond laser platform and nomogram (Bausch & Lomb, USA). The patients’ parameters, including uncorrected and corrected distant visual acuities (UDVA/CDVA) as well as refractive and keratometric values were evaluated pre-operative, then two weeks, three months and six months post-operative.

Results:

The mean preoperative cylindrical refractive errors and keratometric astigmatic levels were 3.77 ± 0.6 dioptres (D) and 3.58 ± 0.84 D, respectively; while 6-months postoperatively they significantly dropped to 0.88 ± 0.46 D (P<0.05) and 1.58 ± 0.36 D (P<0.05), respectively. The percentages of astigmatism reduction have ranged from 43.6% to 82.2%. BDVA ranged from 20/40 to 20/20 (Snellen acuity) before surgery, while at 6 months UDVA ranged from 20/30 to 20/20. No loss of lines was reported, and six eyes (30%) have gained one line.

Conclusions:

Our study results indicate that FSAK with the Victus®️ platform and nomogram is an effective and safe treatment for naturally occurring mixed astigmatism. Nevertheless, a longer follow-up period is necessary to monitor the stability of the outcomes and record any future regressions.
