Abstract Details

Purpose:

Removal time of ophthalmic viscosurgical devices (OVDs) from enucleated porcine cadaver eyes was compared between an investigational intraocular lens (IOL), the Clareon CNA0T0 model, and the AcrySof SN60WF model.

Setting:

The David J Apple International Laboratory for Ocular Pathology, University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany

Methods:

The crystalline lens was removed from twenty freshly enucleated porcine cadaver eyes using standardized phacoemulsification. The capsular bag and anterior chamber of each eye were filled with fluorescein-stained OVD. Ten CNA0T0 and 10 SN60WF IOLs were implanted through a 5 mm capsulorhexis into the capsular bags of the porcine eyes. The OVD was removed immediately following IOL implantation using an irrigation/aspiration method. OVD removal time was calculated for each lens. Differences in OVD removal times for the CNA0T0 and the SN60WF were evaluated using nonparametric statistical analyses.

Results:

OVD was removed completely from the porcine eyes without complication in both IOL models. One eye was excluded from each group, as complete removal of OVD could not be visualized. For the CNA0T0 IOL, OVD removal time for individual eyes ranged from 18 to 40 seconds (mean ± SD, 26.4±7.2 seconds). For the SN60WF IOL, OVD removal time for individual eyes ranged from 16 to 39 seconds (mean ± SD, 23.5±7.0 seconds). There was no statistically significant difference in removal times between the two IOLs.

Conclusions:

The Clareon CNA0T0 and AcrySof SN60WF IOL showed comparable behavior and interaction with the OVD and can be considered equivalent with respect to OVD removal time.
