Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the visual function of patients implanted with the Juvene™ modular, curvature-changing, fluid-optic intraocular lens (Juvene; LensGen®, Inc, Irvine, CA).

Setting:

CODET Vision, Tijuana, Mexico and Okumed, Monterrey, Mexico.

Methods:

The Juvene accommodating IOL was placed following standard small-incision phacoemulsification. The Juvene modular IOL consists of two components, a base lens with a refractive optic that fills the capsular bag, and a curvature-changing fluid-optic. The fluid optic changes power similar to the crystalline lens to provide incremental refractive power for a continuous range of vision, distance to near. Implantation of the Juvene IOL is similar to implantation of standard monofocal IOLs except there are two lens insertions. Postoperative measures include distance-corrected visual acuities (DCVA), contrast sensitivity (CS) under mesopic (3 candles per square meter) conditions and defocus curves.

Results:

Five eyes were implanted with the Juvene IOL. At one month postoperative, mean DCVA were logMAR -0.06 (20/17) at far, 0.16 (20/29) at intermediate, and 0.30 (20/40) at near distances. Mean log contrast sensitivities were 1.63, 1.80, 1.29 and 0.73 at 1.5, 3.0, 6.0 and 12.0 cycles per degree, respectively. With glare, measurements were 1.38, 1.60, 1.44 and 0.75. Defocus curves of the Juvene IOL demonstrated better near and intermediate VA than a standard monofocal IOL and better near VA than an extended depth-of-focus IOL. There were no surgical or postoperative complications. The results of 40 patients will be presented.

Conclusions:

Eyes implanted with the Juvene IOL were able to successfully focus on targets at far, intermediate and near distances. The lens implantation procedure was straightforward and similar to that of a standard monofocal IOL. No surgical difficulties or complications were associated with the Juvene IOL. This suggests that the biomimetic Juvene IOL may provide a successful range of vision from distance through near for patients made pseudophakic after cataract surgery.
