Abstract Details

Purpose:

To describe ocular biometry characteristics and the prevalence of corneal astigmatism before cataract surgery in a single center in Israel.

Setting:

Shaare Zedek Medical Center, Jerusalem, Israel

Methods:

Consecutive measurements of phakic eyes, prior to cataract surgery, taken between Feb 2018 and Jan 2019, were retrospectively analyzed. The minimal age for inclusion was 18 years old. All measurements were taken by a single swept source (SS) OCT-based device.

Results:

2153 eyes were included. 41 eyes had prior corneal refractive procedure. Mean age was 72±12 years old, 53.3% were females and 46.7% males. Mean AL was 23.96±1.75mm [16.52 to 35.59mm], 202 (9.4%) had AL>26.0mm, 129 (6.0%) had AL<22.0mm. Mean Keratometry was 44.11 ± 1.90D [30.96 to 68.59D], mean ACD was 3.16±0.46mm [1.80 to 5.66D], mean LT was 4.51±0.50mm [1.14 to 7.18mm], mean CCT was 540±40 um [370 to 680um], mean WTW was 11.88±0.45mm [9.66 to 13.76mm]. 35.1%, 31.1%, 33.8% had ATR, WTR and oblique corneal astigmatism, respectively. 59.2%, 44.1%, 24.9% of the patients had TCA > 0.75D,1.00D and 1.50D, respectively.

Conclusions:

This study provides information regarding the biometric measurements of cataract surgery candidates in a single center in Israel. The rate of patients with TCA greater than 0.75D reflects the high proportion of patients who are potential candidates for correction of corneal astigmatism during cataract surgery.
