Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the degree of posterior capsular opacification (PCO) and its influence on contrast sensitivity defocus curve (CSDC) after 12 months of two intraocular lenses (IOLs) implantation, Alsafit Trifocal (AT) [Alsanza] and Liberty (L) [Medicontur].

Setting:

Qvision, Ophthalmology Department of Hospital Vithas Virgen del Mar

Methods:

42 subjects, 21 implanted with each IOL, whose CSDC were measured at 3 and 12 months after surgery were included in the analysis. PCO grading was performed by an experienced ophthalmologist through a subjective scale from 0 (nule) to 4 (severe) from a backlight picture with slit lamp. PCO subjective grading was correlated with the difference on area under CSDC (LogCS*m-1) between 3 and 12 months.

Results:

Area under CSDC decreased from 2.82 ± 1.18 to 1.54 ± 1.22 for AT (p<0.0005) and from 2.45 ± 1.09 to 2.16 ± 1.36 (p>0.05) for L, between 3 and 12 months, respectively. 43% of eyes were graded as level 0, 24% as level 1 and 33% as level 2 for AT, while 81% of eyes were graded as level 0, 14% as level 1 and 5% as level 2 for L (p<0.05). The degree of PCO was correlated with the decrease of the area under CSDC between 3 and 12 months (rho=0.35, p=0.02).

Conclusions:

PCO produced a decrease on CSDC between 3 and 12 months after surgery with trifocal IOLs. This reduction was statistically significant only for AT. This difference between two lenses is explained by a less percent of eyes with a subjective grading of PCO at level 0 for AT than for L. Despite using the same hydrophilic material, L present less PCO rating than AT, that could be explained by the transition between optic and haptics or the definition of posterior squared edges of the lenses.
