Abstract Details

Purpose:

To characterize posterior corneal surface features in Down syndrome (DS) patients and compare it with healthy corneas.

Setting:

Vissum Innovation, Alicante. Spain

Methods:

Retrospective, comparative, clinical study including 78 cases; 38 eyes of DS patients and 40 healthy corneas. Corneal posterior surface including dioptric power, shape indices and posterior corneal aberrations were evaluated using rotating Scheimpflug camera and Placido disc topographer (Sirius system, CSO, Firenze, Italy) and compare it between both groups.

Results:

Average of Posterior keratometry in DS group was -6.48 +/- 0.37 and -6.19 +/- 0.24 in control group (p<0.01). In relation to posterior surface shape indices RMS/A (posterior surface irregularity) showed a significant difference between DS patients 0.22 +/- 0.22 and control group 0.08 +/- 0.02 (p<0.01). Regarding posterior corneal aberrations, DS patients presented a level of high order aberrations (HOA) of 1,07 +/- 1.40 and coma-like aberrations of 0.87 +/- 1,08 in opposite to control that showed posterior HOA of 0.14 +/- 0.06 and coma-like aberrations of 0.12 +/- 0.06, differences that were also statistically significant (p<0.01).

Conclusions:

There is a significant morphological alteration in posterior corneal surface of DS patients when compare with a control group. Posterior corneal surface of DS patients are significant steeper, thinner and with more higher order aberrations than healthy corneas.
