Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine the safety and efficacy of a new extended macular vision intraocular lens (IOL) implanted in patients with macular disease undergoing cataract extraction.

Setting:

Micro Chirurgia Oculare, Milano. Italy

Methods:

A retrospective case review of 152 eyes from 118 patients with stable macular disease undergoing phacoemulsification cataract extraction and implantation with an extended macular vision IOL (EyeMax mono, LEH Pharma, UK) between March 2016 and March 2019. Outcome measures were change in visual acuity after surgery, postoperative refraction, intraocular pressure and predicted gain with a 1.3x magnifier.

Results:

Median follow-up was 8 months. There were no intra- or post-operative complications. No subject lost visual acuity. Median (IQR) pre-operative visual acuity increased from 59 (35 – 65) ETDRS letters to 74 (50 – 80) ETDRS letters. Median gain in ETDRS letters was 15 letters (CI 96.5%: 11 – 15; p<0.01; mean 15 letters). 51% of operated eyes achieved ≥15 letter gain in visual acuity. A trend was observed towards greater improvements in subjects with worse pre-operative visual acuity (r = –0.4; p <0.01). There was a moderate correlation between predicted gain and actual letters gained (r = 0.48; p<0.01).

Conclusions:

Our data provide evidence that the EyeMax mono extended macular vision intraocular lens has safety outcomes equivalent to standard monofocal IOLs. Visual outcomes appear to exceed those obtained with standard IOLs in subjects with macular disease.
