Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the impact of varying fluidic parameters (different bottle heights) on corneal endothelial cell loss in patients who underwent cataract surgery

Setting:

This retrospective study analyzed data from patients who underwent uncomplicated cataract surgery performed by the same surgeon from October to November 2018 at the operative unit of ophthalmology, hospital of Chiari - Italy

Methods:

Seventy-eight eyes of 78 patients were divided into two groups: group A (bottle height 55 cm, vacuum 600 mmHg) and group B (bottle height 95 cm, vacuum 600 mmHg). Endothelial cell counts were done preoperatively and 90 days after surgery. Information about age, sex, nuclear density, time of surgery, ultrasound energy was recorded. Statistical analysis was performed by using Student’s t test

Results:

There was no statistically singnificant difference between group A and group B in terms of ultrasound energy used, time of surgery, endothelial cell counts prior and after surgery. Anyway, the percentage of cell loss 90 days after surgery was lower in group A (15,98%) then in group B (26,29%)

Conclusions:

No statistically significant difference was detected using different bottle heights, although lower fluidic parameters would seem to give a better control and a lower decrease of endothelial cells in cataract surgery. Anyway, larger studies are needed to confirm this finding.
